You don’t know how much you use it until you lose it. Suddenly I can’t answer emails from customers, do my blog, or print seed packet labels. Eeek, and my computer guy said my hard drive is shot, with all my files too. Yep, I should have backed stuff up. No, I didn’t. Bad me. I tried to buy another desktop at Walmart, but they don’t carry them anymore! I hate laptops! I’m using Will’s now. Our friend, Sherri, had it as she does our book work and was entering orders from Seed Treasures customers. With no other choice, I went to get it. I came home and tried to order a new desktop from Amazon but had forgotten my password. Nothing we did would work; phones, emails, etc. Double eeek! Whew, what a day!

Anyway, back to homesteading. Yesterday, Dara and Sherri again came to pack up seeds with us. Then Will went down to the cow yard and found a brand-new heifer calf! He’d been expecting that calf for weeks, but nothing happened. Luckily, it was a nice warm afternoon and the heifer had her baby on a nice big hay pile. Perfect! — Jackie
Thanks Mary. My new computer is coming tomorrow and then we’ll begin a new merry-go-round. And Yes, I will backup my documents and photos in the future. I hope.
Jackie, oh what a mess! Computer issues makee nuts at times. Fortunately my husband can do a rebuild on computers. He just repaired mine with a new touch pad for my laptop. We’re going to have to rebuild my desk top computer. As far as Amazon, use Will info as a new account. The password issue is a problem. You can call Amazon to talk to someone about your problem but the suggestion about using Wills information may be easier. We a back up drive called Book. The total storage varies on size that you buy. I can see if my husband can help long distance if you want. You can get hard drive info recovered if you get the drive pulled. There’s companies that do that as business. If I were you I’d buy a really large back up drive. I’ve got a couple and can give you better information later. Since you are doing business on the computer you may be able to write off the new computer as a tax write off next year plus all of efforts to recover information from the hard drive. If you want to talk to my husband via email or text let me know here and we set up contact. He may be able to recover the hard drive but that means you’d have to send it to Idaho. He rebuilds computers and worked as an online tech too. It would be better for you two to talk to each other about this. I can promise you all your information will be handed back to and he doesn’t troll through the drive other than the needed repair works.
Thanks so much for your information and offer of help. Right now, we’ve explored the recovery companies and found their expense too high for us. Our computer guy is very good but it doesn’t sound promising. He’s still working on trying a recovery of the lost data though. We’ll see how that goes. Right now I’m working on Will’s laptop and I don’t get along well with them!! Yes, we do have a backup external hard drive but I’m not sure if I saved stuff on it. Should have but may not have…..
Well computers are a tool that is handy, but I tend to rely on it too much, then am disappointed when it breaks down in my hour of need.
At least you get to rejoice at the really important stuff…blessings of new life, and a harbinger of spring!
Life is about that simple eh😏
Yes, it is. Even though we grit our teeth at technology all too often~ New computer coming tomorrow. We’ll see what new stress that brings with it.
There are online backup services that will back up everything on your machine automatically to the cloud and keep all data secure for you. Backblaze is one, and there will likely e backup services available on your new computer, provided by Microsoft. They work well.
Beware of the Ides of March!! Sorry for the bad luck, but praying all will right itself for you in the coming days!
Technology is just great, until it isn’t, lol. Sorry about the crash. I once had been working on a project for work and had not backed it up and lost a bunch of data I had to reenter. Ugh! I feel your pain. Congrats on the new calf. Spring has wonderful surprises sometimes. Sending prayers for a blessed week!
Thank you. I’m hoping this week goes better than last one, for sure.
I’m sorry to hear this about your desktop, Jackie.
My monitor went down on mine so couldn’t access anything.
I broke out my much disliked laptop and it kept kicking me
offline and finally was able to replace the monitor with one
my daughter had. I save a lot on an external hard drive so
if had to get to some things I could but still a pain in the arse.
I’m glad you could use Sherri’s and hope you can get on Amazon
soon.
I’m thankful for the healthy calf and a nice addition to the family.
May your evening be a whole lot less stressful.
‘Well, the new computer is coming Wednesday and I’m still on Will’s laptop that Sherri had. Ugh!~! I type way too fast for it and it enters strange words because of it. Maybe I’m justy too sloppy.
Just a suggestion… You can use an external monitor and keyboard with a laptop and it will work just like a desktop. Don’t know what the better financial option is, but I wish you luck. Also… If you’re not saving your info in a cloud somewhere… Get an external drive to back it up. Enjoy that new baby. (Calf)
Got an external hard drive; had it before the computer crash. Had I backed up everything? Probably not. Can’t tell as it’s still at the computer repair shop. No, I don’t use the Cloud.
I’ve got it hooked up to my printer and I tried the keyboard but the laptop couldn’t recognize it. Arggg! So I’m gritting my teeth and typing on the laptop. New computer coming tomorrow.
Okay, you are not on a happy streak here. Amazon is best at selling you stuff and charging your card. If you have a problem, there are very few ways to contact a live person and get a good outcome. I really like sites who ask if you have forgotten your password, and when you click that button, the page pops up and asks you for your old password… if you had the old password. you wouldn’t be looking to change it. Hope you find a computer you like. Hope you figure out the password problem. Glad you have a new calf and I love those springy pictures of your flowers. Hurry up spring! I’m wishing you the luck of the Irish tomorrow, whether you are Irish or not! Wishing you a better day.
There are places that can sometimes recover the files on a crashed hard drive. We work from home and had a computer crash on us and even though we use external hard drives for files there were still vital files on the computer drive. All we did was pay for an external drive that the place put the retrieved files on and a reasonable charge for the work. We had to buy a new computer but, at least there was less stress when we had the retrieved files to work with.
Our computer guy gave us the contacts for companies that recover data but we just can’t afford them. Oh well… You’d think I would learn one of these days. BACK UP
Hate to say it but I learned years ago to never leave anything on a computer that you are not willing to lose. Anything important I print off and file. Anything for long term reference is printed off and put into a folder. As handy as a computer is it does have its faults. On another note how about an article on onions. Saving seeds and raising from seeds. As easy as it is supposed to be I am having horrible luck!
Yep, I give up. I’ll always backup in the future. I’ll talk to my editors about doing an onion seed saving article and raising them from seed. Good idea.
Oh Know! nothing backed up:( sounds familiar. we get so used to electronic storage, mail, internet )that we are instantly thrown! when it happens. I still do my accounts on paper, never trusted m husbands file system,. hope Wills computer has some of your files. i too hate theses lap tops. congratulations on a healthy heifer! thank goodness temps are more pleasant for calving. such a frustrating time for you. at least you have your starts sprouting around the wood stove :) just finished getting my tomato s and one last pepper i d forgot. starting these all in the recommended peat pots. looking forward to no dampening of or fungus!( that seem to plague me )
praying for a better week ahead for you. take care
