Will and I had been intending on seeing the new Tom Cruise movie, Mission Impossible — Dead Reckoning at our local small-town theater. But we got busy until yesterday, the day we thought was the last playing of the movie. So, we drove in before supper, where Will spotted the title of The Sound of Freedom on the marquis. Oh, oh, we’d missed it! However, I had previously seen some very positive reviews of this movie, so we decided to stay. Holy cow, the movie was absolutely stunning. I shook for the first hour of the movie and I’ll swear I spotted tears in Will’s tough-guy eyes, next to me.

Based on a true story, the film follows a federal agent (played by Jim Caviezel) who, after rescuing a boy from child traffickers, learns that his sister is still held captive. He decides he must save her, and quits his job to journey deep into the Colombian jungle, to save the girl from a fate worse than death. This movie will sure open your eyes as well as provide a couple hours of very intense entertainment. I very heartily recommend it!

I cut our first Umpqua broccoli yesterday that I started from seed.

When Will and I got home, it was 8 p.m. and we hadn’t had supper yet. So, I quickly fried a couple of boneless pork chops, then chopped up some broccoli I had just harvested, dumped in a can and a half of cream of chicken soup and a half cup of grated cheddar cheese on top. It went in the oven at 350 degrees, with a cover on it. Meanwhile, I had a frying pan with some very tasty bacon grease in it from the night before’s BLTs that I couldn’t waste. I’d harvested a few of our first Costata Romanesco zucchini squash yesterday. I first sliced up a large onion and started that frying. Then I cut up the squash into fairly thin slices and added them, along with some seasonings. To hurry things up, I added a cup of water and put the lid on the pan. Periodically, I stirred up the squash/onion mix and added a bit of water to keep it from sticking. Soon, dinner was served and we hungrily gobbled it down. Wow, that was sure a winner for a quick supper! I love our life.

We really love our late supper with fried onions and squash as well as baked pork chops smothered in soup, broccoli, and cheese. Yum! Cost? 68 cents for the Aldi’s soup!

  1. I’ve been wondering about that movie – just saw the guy who helped fund it was arrested for felony non-familial kidnapping of a child under 14.

    • One thing I’ve learned through life is not to believe everything you hear. Perhaps true, perhaps not. But the movie was still excellent, regardless.

      • Just did the research and found he was one of over 6,000 investors in the movie. I’m sure all weren’t saints…. Just saying.

      • The Woke, especially in Hollyweird, are very upset about this movie. I assume that is because it is hitting close to home. It seems to me whenever the Woke get upset there is always a campaign to discredit those with a different view. Whether or not this man is guilty or not is a separate issue from the movie and its message. Distraction is the name of the game. Arrest and charge someone in order to gaslight and distract from the real issues which is enslavement of children and adults going on right under our noses right now.

  2. Wonderful news all around! Our broccoli is bountiful this summer (as well as all the other seeds we bought from you). And The Sound of Freedom is definitely one of the best movies ever made. I love OUR and have followed Tim Ballard for about 4 years now. They’ve rescued almost 7,000 people from trafficking and have almost the same number of arrests. God’s work!!!

    • I’m so glad your seeds are doing well! Isn’t that so wonderful, that one tiny seed can make a meal?? Then go on to make even more, later on. We were grateful to learn of Tim Ballard’s work. See? There are still wonderful, kind people out there today!!!

  3. Jackie, I have supported Tim Ballard’s OUR mission for several years. I believe they are doing God’s work. Glad you both took a little time out for yourselves. Love watching your garden endeavors grow and grow! Your work is such a good example for all of us.

  4. Isn’t it the most satisfying feeling to prepare a meal from food you have grown yourself! I love being able to do that, it gives me great comfort. I’m so glad you enjoyed the movie. I have not seen it, but several people I know have and they highly recommend it as well. As I write this we are getting a little rain. I am so thankful!! I think south of me a few miles, they are getting heavy rains, but I am thankful for every drop we get. Prayers for a safe and healthy week.

    • We are so grateful to be receiving periodic, “normal” rains now! Even though the weeds are growing so fast, so are the vegetables! I hope you get a chance to see the movie. It’s truly inspiring.

  5. wow! you left the farm! good for you, entertainment is a nice break. all too often we dont allow ourselves the relaxation. then. you fix a fabulous meall! by not a shred of waste ‘yesterdays bacon grease, fresh harvest of the day. it truly makes y mouth water at your description.

  6. Oh, Jackie: It’s so neat to hear you’re enjoying your life; clean and wholesome; rewards from your labor and faithfulness!! Thank you for your day’s testimony that is so lifting!

  7. Haven’t seen a movie in a theater in many years. It’s 240 miles one way to the nearest and if we go to town it’s Dr appointment, shop and head home unless the Dr appt requires stay over the night. We have lots of broccoli and cauliflower right now too!

    • Here in far north California, the heat is such that cauliflower and broccoli can’t grow in summer; maybe into May or June, but not July or August. But, today I started germinating those, plus cabbage for transplant into the garden in mid-August for fall harvest!

    • I’ve seen exactly three movies at a theater in 26 years! I know what you mean. For us, it’s not so much distance, but TIME. This one was sure worth it. I believe it’s also available to view on your computer.
That fresh broccoli and cauliflower is sure much better than store-bought!!

    • Me too! We think we’re pretty much “up” on world events but now I know we’re not.

  8. I have been following Tim Ballard’s story for years, his organization Operation Underground Railroad, has now rescued scores of children from the sex-slavery world. I also saw the movie with my husband, who said he liked it”a movie I would not have chosen for myself” he said. The organization is worth supporting in $$ if able and definitely in prayers. Glad to hear your garden is doing well(have not checked you blog in awhile) hope all else is good with you and yours.

  9. Fantastic supper…fantastic movie! Thanks for taking your limited time to share this with us. Blessings.
