Our newly re-elected President told Sarah Brady and company that he was working “under the radar” for more “gun control.” We reported it here. He told the Russians that he’d have “more flexibility” after he was re-elected. We told you that here.
About 12 hours after he was declared the victor in the Presidential race, it was announced that his administration was calling for NATO to reconsider the onerous international small arms treaty that would have profoundly chilling effects on the rights of American gun owners. My friend Dave Workman, a tireless activist for gun owners’ civil rights, explains it all here: http://www.examiner.com/article/the-day-after-u-n-moves-quickly-on-global-gun-control-debate?cid=db_articles .
Simultaneously, Dianne Feinstein is apparently introducing a new semi-automatic firearms ban, one which is vastly farther-reaching and more draconian than the one Bill Clinton ramrodded through and forced us to live with for a decade. This one will have no sunset clause. You won’t be able to sell the guns you own which “fit the (ridiculous) profile” of what will be forbidden…which very likely means you won’t be able to bequeath those guns to your children. Check it out here: http://www.examiner.com/article/feinstein-rumored-to-be-pushing-semi-auto-ban-if-obama-reelected
Carolyn McCarthy, a vehement single issue anti-gunner, doesn’t just encourage President Obama to use executive orders to curtail your rights to own firearms: she publicly states that she thinks he’ll actually do it, according to HuffPost, here: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/07/24/gun-control-carolyn-mccarthy-obama-executive-authority_n_1699641.html
Hey, all you Obama apologists who wrote into this blog over the last few months saying that he didn’t want to interfere with your gun ownership rights…what do you think NOW?
One of our regular blog commentators said recently that he wished I’d get off politics and back to talking about guns. I hear ya, Doc, but the thing of it is…there ain’t much more important “about guns” than the right to acquire, own, and keep them.
The good news is that none of these proposals will make their way past the proposal stage. The NATO treaty requires a 2/3 approval vote in the Senate and the GOP-controlled House won’t let Feinstein’s bill out of committee.
Executive orders may be an issue, but they’ll likely get sued out of existence and I guarantee you that if it makes it to the SCOTUS, the power of the President to rule via order will be severely limited.
Hey libs, DO NOT ask for what you cannot TAKE! Come get you some! Beware of lead poisoning though…
Very well stated, Mas.
All of this is troubling, but none of it is surprising from Obama and his anti-freedom allies. One of the easiest ways for an ineffective politician to pander when faced with terrorist attacks (more likely, given our weakness hear and abroad) and/or rising violent crime is to restrict the rights of the law-abiding to show that they’re “doing something” about the problem.
Obama, IMHO, firmly believes that the plebs should not have the rights to own weapons. He has stated so in the past, if we believe John Lott’s account (and I do).
Keep up the good work,
Bob G
Reid v. Covert ruled that the Constitution supersedes any international treaties ratified by the Senate. Thus considered how do you see this affecting gun owner in the US? Does anyone really believe that any kind of gun control legislation has any chance of making it through the House? Heck even most of the blues are afraid to support it.
“You won’t be able to sell the guns you own which “fit the (ridiculous) profile” of what will be forbidden…which very likely means you won’t be able to bequeath those guns to your children.”
One question about the above statement of which I’ve seen similar expressed other places.
How many freedom minded gun owners do you expect to tell the government when they give firearms to their kids or loved ones? I would expect those type of bequests to be taken care of well before a person passes and listing that in a legal will, regardless of type of firearm would be asking for confiscation or punitive taxes.
Well, that McCarthy HuffPo article was from July (Aurora shootings). I wouldn’t have even noticed it (despite the date being in the URL to the article), had I not asked myself:
– If McCarthy thinks Obama is such a “good person” and that “good” people want to ban/restrict guns, then why does she think this couldn’t happen until after Obama was re-elected and a lameduck? [Seems like a dirty trick to wait until he has nothing to lose if it’s such a “good” action to take.]
Well, it’s because her naivety thought Obama would do something *BEFORE* he was re-elected, of course.
Me? I think Obama will pursue executive orders and taxation (with mixed results) as a means of partial regulation (impediment).
Have a favorite European maker? Well, that might just get held up by the ATF importation regulations via a new Exec Order.
Want an imported curio that is cleaned up with US made parts to satisfy 922R? Well, the raw supply of demilled parts kits might be limited.
Think that sounds silly? What happened to all of those US made M1 Garands that were left over in Korea that the Koreans wanted to bring back to the U.S. and drop on our open market. Well, the bureaucrats stifled that from happening…
Now, had the House not been balanced to the right in this past election, this would be a different story.
There will be attempts by people like McCarthy and Feinstein, but I don’t see them really going anywhere too seriously, at least not for a little while.
I truly hope none of this comes to pass. Congress remains divided so I doubt legislation would ever make it through. But I am starting to think the conspiracy theory nuts may be onto something. You may wish to exclude the following from posts because it may start another flame war in tone comments. The conspiracy nuts point to the “militarization” of police (DHS, Military, Local Police combined training exercises). They point to ammo purchases and laws such as NADA. So it makes one wonder if nay e the conspiracy nuts are right and a huge gun grab is in the works. I personally no many LEOs and all are mostly peace officers, friends. The occasional bad apple but you get those in any family. They have stated that its just conspiracy without merit. Do you have any thoughts on this? Since you work with various departments across the nation I figured you would have a better perspective tban most.
The HOUSE won’t go along with any crazy bills out of the Senate. For the Republicans to even stay marketable, they must deliver “something” to their core constituent groups.
Just like Cockroaches when the lights when out they came out. They would not talk about guns as they know it would only cost them. Not worried about laws for the next couple years. The BATF is who I am afraid of. Rule making will be the big thing. Government can do about anything they want now. Obama doesn’t like a law so he states we will not enforce it but go by a bill that never passed both houses or signed by him.
Not scared for me Mas I am scared for my children and grandchildren. Any government that wants to impose its will only has one way to do it and that is with a fist. Like I stated I don’t look for any laws to pass the next couple years as the house is still in Rep control. Rule making is the big thing. But as for banning semi-autos and not being able to sell them they must know who has them and what they have. That means they must have registration. They can’t do it without registration. That will be the straw that breaks the camels back.
Regarding the treaty:
An official at the U.S. mission said Washington’s objectives have not changed.
“We seek a treaty that contributes to international security by fighting illicit arms trafficking and proliferation, protects the sovereign right of states to conduct legitimate arms trade, and meets the concerns that we have been articulating throughout,” the official said.
“We will not accept any treaty that infringes on the constitutional rights of our citizens to bear arms,” he said.
U.S. officials have acknowledged privately that the treaty under discussion would have no effect on domestic gun sales and ownership because it would apply only to exports.
The Feinstein bill is pure conjecture at this point. That doesn’t mean there is no substance to the rumors–where there’s smoke, there’s often fire–but given how ticked off a lot of people are about Obama’s re-election right now, I wouldn’t be surprised to find a lot of people hiding in bushes rubbing sticks together either. Until there is the actual text of an actual bill to look at, and until Obama indicates that he intends to sign said bill, I still consider my $5 safe.
Regarding Carolyn McCarthy: she wants Obama to use executive orders to curtail firearm rights? Whoop-dee-doo. I want Obama to give me a pony. We all want things.
PS: You never said if you were taking the bet. To re-iterate, $5 says Obama will not sign, or indicate that he intends to sign, a bill that would reinstate the AWB or some analog of it. Has to be an actual bill that has been put forward, not a rumor or a draft bill. I leave it to our good will and discretion to define “some analog of the AWB,” but I would be willing to discuss specifics if you feel it’s necessary.
Sounds like time to say “I told you so”.
Problem is, that won’t fix the real problem, whose name is “Obama”, and now he has four more years, not only to take away our only means of defense against a totalitarian government, but to figure out how to get around the “No Third Term” rule, and make himself “President for Life”.
Don’t know if this means that “Good Men Stood around and did nothing”, or there aren’t any Good Men left, to “do anything”?
The one thing we have going for us at this point is the continued Republican majority in the House. I don’t think you will get any such bill through there. There are probably still enough Democrats who remember losing their majority after passing the last one as well. As for the treaty, I’m not sure that the Senate would ratify it.
This all concerns me greatly and I was really hoping not to have to work so hard to protect my rights for another four years, but I try to remain optimistic.
Well now. Not really surprised. Our only hope is that he doubles the amount of time that he plays golf.
Can’t disagree with anything you say here (or have said in the past).
Denial of Obama’s evil (yes, EVIL) agenda for America- in all its possible forms- is pure stupidity at this point. But it’s still going to be there.
God help this country and its increasingly-poor-excuse for citizenry.
In the past, I always thought that with the internet we had some safety net to rapidly inform the electorate and other like minded individuals. Thus, a piece by piece dismantling of our rights would be nearly impossible. Much like this blog keeps us informed. I understand that the procedures are now in place that the President can shut it down, supposedly in a National emergency! Imagine having to go back to the popular media to get the truth! Without coordinated exchange of information we would be blind with only rumors to go on. Anyone see the movie THE POSTMAN. Yes, I know it was a crappy movie, but it does show how valuable quick and accurate information can be.
This is no surprise at all. Nor does he care for our other “rights’ either. And he should be able to pack the supreme court over the next four years as well.
Congratulations Amerika. You just voted away your Constitution.
Mas, Your last line says it all. What could be more important then securing our right to own guns. Keep blogging what interests you, because you have been on the mark for the 24 years I have read your articles.
Hmmm. Looks like I stand corrected.
Thanks for reading my comments Mas.
And thanks for not following them.
I’d love to write more, but I gotta run. The gun store closes in a couple hours and I bet there’s a line.
I, too, kept getting the “No one is coming for your guns” condescending responses to my posts (especially on Huffington Post) whenever I raised the red flag of the dangers of returning Da One to the White House for another four years. Raising the “more flexibility” issue got more condescension like the only thing he’d have “more flexibility” on was missile defense.
ECS
Well I for one am tired of shutting up and drinking the kool-aid………….
Mas,
Thanks for doing your homework. I am stunned by the speed with which Obummer is moving against us. Thank God we still have access to accurate information. How long will it take for the administration to go after Fox News and talk radio? Maybe we patriots should move to Texas and build a wall around it, then declare the U.S. Constitution to be the law of our land. If only I had more money so I could buy more guns!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well here we go just as I thought, just faster, I’m thinking this is going to get very nasty and this is just what they were looking forward too they want this to turn into unrest, we are going to loose are country and they are working hard and fast to see to it, all of the Constitution will soon be a thing of the past as much of it has already been nulified, over half of the voters just threw it out and it is going to get much worse. I have watched this happen over more than seventy years now slowly but surely we have lost what once was ours, my heart hurts for the young people that will have to live through it and for all the the fine young soldiers who have died through the years defending it. May God Bless America.
I hope the hunters that fancy themselves some sort of purists and look down their collective noses at handguns and military appearing firearms realize that the deer rifle they own is a “Sniper’s Weapon” to the anti-gun crowd.
Talk about a loss of respect for Ayoob when the first thing about the Brady comment is a made up lie by the NRA:
http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2012/jun/14/national-rifle-association/barack-obama-coming-after-guns-under-radar-nra-say/
Knock it off with the alarmist propaganda and lies, it’s really obnoxious. People like you are driving up the price of ammo and guns with your fearmongering.
Why am I not surprised at this. Obama has always hated guns and lies about supporting the Second Amendment.
Do you really think Obama needs a bill or legislation? He has circumnavigated so many thing in prior years. If one of his money suppliers offers him the right amount he will bypass the constitution. He back doored and closed doored OBAMCARE. What’s next.
For Heaven’s sake, Nate — or at least for honesty’s sake — that’s a pretty weak first post here. Do you even read the things you link to?
Try to do better…or go back to the Sarah Brady blog where your regurgitated Kool-Aid will produce less sympathetic vomiting.
Not doubting your sources but I’ll get alarmed when I see this in the print media I read.
Internet news also is sometimes pretty flaky.
Hard to see major gun legislation, a red button issue, getting through Congress when even less loaded issues can’t. sorry for the pun.
There are alot of really smart political people is these actions impeachable? If so weres the paper i will sign it
“I guarantee you that if it makes it to the SCOTUS, the power of the President to rule via order will be severely limited.”
That guarantee pretty well depends on who the president appoints to SCOTUS.
I too would be happier if Mas would get off politics. Only trouble is politics isn’t going to get off of us.
Let me draw everyones attention to two executive orders made by William Jefferson Clinton. The first was in 1998 banning the importation of over 50 semi auto “assault weapons” the second in 2001 banning the importation of “assault pistols”,what ever the hell those are. These executive orders are still in effect, they haven’t been sued out of existence, they haven’t been reversed by Republicans. Now think to yourself what would happen if the same was done to imported ammunition. How long do you think it would take for existing supplies to sell out and how much do you think it would be when you saw it again. But the nay sayers would be right! He didn’t take your guns! What really freaks me out is the fact that some folks trust and believe him! Now remember! He’s a politician and a lawyer!
I’m going to buy more poisonous yellow tree frogs for my frog ranch so I’ll have more stuff to tip the darts for my Cold Steel blowgun which hopefully will be exempt or overlooked by our Dear Leader’s anti-gun henchpersons.
Hopefully most of the readers/posters on this blog has learned from what happened with HillBilly’s teasonous act of 1994 and stocked up on guns, magazines, ammo, reloading supplies and other needed stuff before this election – just in case. I too was hoping Romney/Ryan would win and at least slow down our country’s downward death spiral, but the first sign for me that things may not look good was when Romney chose Ryan over Rubio for VP. Ryan would make an excellent Secretary of the Treasury, but Romney needed someone who could help him win, not someone who’s a financial wizard. The first presidential debate was certainly uplifting, but Romney didn’t continue his momentum or keep the pressure on the Anointed One to keep him off balance. Then when Sandy struck, Romney tried to be a nice guy and stand down while our Dear Leader hogged the limelight in photo ops with a fawning Chris Christie who I thought was about to drop to his knees and do a Monica Lewinsky for the Messiah.
We all know how nice guys finish – second or last.
But back to guns. I learned my lesson from HillBilly and raided my very meager piggy bank to buy a few things I figure may come in handy in these uncertain times. Why not spend rapidly devaluating dollars of fiat money for real things like ammunition. As long as one has enough cash to take care of normal expenses, it’s better to have a current dollar’s worth of ammo or gold than a dollar bill which is going lower in value over time as government printing presses are running overtime. If you have some money you can spare, buy stuff now while it’s still available at a decent price. If the crap really hits the fan, that box of .22LR, 9mm, 45 ACP, .223 or .308 ammo is worth a lot more than a wallet full of cash which doesn’t even work that well as a bird cage liner or toilet paper.
Mas, You said: “…there ain’t much more important “about guns” than the right to acquire, own, and keep them.”
I’d like to refine that thought by saying obama’s Supreme Court nominees will tell us everything obama thinks we need to know about our Constitution.
What’s troubling is all of the “assumptions” in these posts, that “no legislation will pass with the Republican majority in the House.”
Really? What happens, in say, in 2014 the Democrats re-take control of the House and increase their stranglehold on the Senate?
NEVER assume that any of this legislation written and proposed by the left wing nut jobs in the Senate or House won’t pass.
We need to make it abundantly clear to ALL members of the Senate and Congress, that We The People are who right their paychecks and who WILL fire their butts!
Molon Labe!
I think you erred on the side of caution this time Mas. You should have moderated Nate’s comment into oblivion. I believe in free speech and all, however, he’s nothing but a troll for the Brady gang.
I’m still amazed that a man with such a track record can get not only the electoral vote, but the popular as well, for a second term. Even a perceived faux pas by a conservative/republican politician is enough to mar him for the rest of his life, to include the relentless ridicule of his progeny,The total disregard for Constitutional norms by the current White House resident is up front, and reported with aplomb by a lap dog media that only sees wrong committed by the right. Bernie Goldberg was exactly correct in his book about media bias, “the only time the media mentions left-wing is when they are talking about aircraft parts.”
My question is, how can any thinking adult NOT see the clearly anti-constitutional, statist, classic narcissistic nature of this man? The first time he came up on the radar he was quoted on video lamenting that the Constitution didn’t do enough to allow government “to do more for you.” A charter of “negative liberties” I believe he called it. Since being sworn in he proceeded to violate the oath at every turn. Spare me the noise about how they all do it. I understand that. But this is not only in your face, so to speak, but the demographics seems to be accepting of it. That’s the scary part.
All of this is only my opinion, which counts for nothing.
Oh! and Doc…..that’s funny; long lines at the gun shop! LOL!!!
As far as exec orders—
Bush1signed UN agenda 21, the senate refused to ratify it. Clinton renamed it and put in into effect with an exec order.
Obama loves to circumvent congress with exec orders, brags about it.
According to at least two articles I read Thr night the arms trade treaty will be done and voted on in March.
I fear in four years none of us will recognize our country.
@Mas: because I didn’t see this posted, I changed the spelling on a couple of the words that might have kept it from being approved before.
——————————————————————————–
Here in Oregon there have been efforts in the past to ban lawful concealed carry permit holders from carrying on school grounds. Those efforts have been defeated because the Republicans had enough votes to block those attempts.
This election changed all that and the Democrats now have a majority in the House.
It is expected that bills will be introduced next year in the legislature to change the carry law. The Democrat govenor has said that if such a bill crosses his desk he will sign it. 🙁
The hoplophobes really do believe that eliminating lawful carry will prevent mayhem with firearms by monsters on school grounds. Permit holders of course are the most LEAST likely to do such things.
There is a book out that says liberals are mentally ill. They truly are.
The Republican led House and a third of the Senate will be up for re-election in 2 years. I’m afraid Boehner and the Republican establishment will feel they have to cave in on a lot of things in order to keep control of the House in 2 years. If the Democrats take control of the House in 2 years, we will officially be under authoritarian rule.
Speaking from across the pond . . . good luck, but I don’t get the vibe of Obama as being a potential dictator, well least no more so than any other politician, and IMHO the worse case is that in four years time there will be a debate which cndidate would be most likely to reverse the previous emcumbents unpoplular decicisons.
Just my take.
And Dale Hanna, as to “asualt pistols” I think this is the sort of thing being refferred to:
http://www.gunsinternational.com/Assault-Pistols.cfm?cat_id=204
Mas, I’ve read your books and columns for years and you were 100% right on what we are facing. You don’t know how much I wish that you had been wrong on this! Anyway, I guess its time to get out the PVC tube again. Even obeying 100% of what’s on the books now, I can imagine the bad guys going around seizing guns from innocents knowing it will cost too much to get ’em back in legal fees. This guy is like Clinton on steroids for all the kinds of bad headed America’s way for the next 4 years.
Maybe an article on what balance of parts, mags, and ammo per gun seems best, along with tips on caching would be appropriate for all the new guys who didn’t live through AWB 1.0? Just a suggestion – I always like reading your columns and this is something that is going to be of interest to me now and to others who were in denial over the danger posed by a second term very soon.
Maybe also we should all bring ourselves up to speed on legal fictions like gun trusts that may help if there’s a transfer ban? IANAL, so any info would help – not even sure if there’s a glimmer of a hope for us there.
God save the Republic,
Grumpy
Shall we go back to 1937 in Germany and compare that to what seems to be in store for the USA in the coming four years? Did England or any other country who removed firearms from its people experience less crime-of any kind? I think not! Why do treehuggers think that it would be different here? If the so called “Black Rifles” or high capacity arms are outlawed, your .22’s and 12ga. bird guns will shortly follow-we need to all hang together or we will surely hang alone. Just food for thought.
“Why not spend rapidly devaluating dollars of fiat money for real things like ammunition. Tom, great minds think alike. Prices are already going up; availability is shrinking — and I can’t find anything else that will provide as much “return on investment” at the moment. Toilet paper isn’t likely to be banned, even if the price goes up.
The ONLY political contributions I’ve made this year, have been to the NRA. I don’t always agree with them and what they support – but at least we’re on the same page as far as basic rights of citizens. Their track record is pretty good – lobbying and lawsuits – and I’d much rather battle that way as long as it’s effective, than with my ammo.
I’m going to the Wanenmacher Arms Show in Tulsa this weekend with my grandkids and my brother. I think it’s time for me to buy a few thousand rounds of 5.56×45 NATO and .38 Special/.357 Magnum, so we’ll take the dolly with us in the truck. Luckily my Ruger Mini-14 doesn’t care what I feed it, so this won’t break the bank.
Don’t wait. Buy now.
ECS
Sitting back and playing the strong silent types as we’ve all done in the past will ensure that Obama and his angry cronies will get their way with our guns, our rights and our safety.
We must be loud and proud of who we are and what we believe in and stop this nonsense at every single turn.
Stop hoping for change and make it happen!
Off subject, but I’m currently reading “Twlight in America” a great new book about the existing anti-American terrorist training facilities across the USA. A highly recommended eye opener.
“that will never pass”
I recall hearing that about Obamacare and they did it anyway despite opposition. I do remember that not all of the Republicans voted our side.
“that could never pass” is wishful thinking that may not hold up. If you want any of the goodies on the list, now would be a good time to get them in case any of this gun-control garbage comes into effect be it by law, executive order, or just bureaucratic interpretation by some unelected .gov officials.
A democracy fails when the ruling class can get enough of the populace dependant on them to have an unshakeable majority. Then they can start to push through increasingly draconian laws that increase their power and strip the people of God given rights. Once they can convince enough that God is non-existent we are down to government given rights that can be taken away at a moment’s notice.
By all accounts Obama should have been soundly defeated on Tuesday. Almost every group should have been against him. By the Christian vote alone he should have lost. Everyone of every religion should have stood with the Catholics in defense of the attack on their church. Pick off the largest, strongest religion and the rest become easy targets.
But what we saw was what Romney meant with his 47% comment. It is wise not to bite the hand that feeds you. As we continually add people to the dependency train we make it harder and harder to elect anyone who will strive to do what is right because it means taking away things people shouldn’t have in the first place. No one is willing to give up their gravy. Take it from someone else. Everyone wants health care. It’s just everyone wants someone else to pay for it for them.
One of these issues will be the straw that breaks this country’s back. When a bush gets overgrown you are forced to prune it back. When this can no longer be done civilly through elected officials it will be done forcibly. We have come very close to states leaving the union in the past five years. Firearms ownership is one of those straws. Pray that cooler heads will prevail and that this country will swing back to the principals that made us the greatest nation on this planet.
