From redalertpolitics.com comes this critical analysis of a New York Times piece about the history of the Stand Your Ground law in Florida.  http://redalertpolitics.com/2012/07/11/new-york-times-misrepresents-facts-on-floridas-stand-your-ground-law/

Thanks to gun-savvy Florida attorney Steve Harris for sending it along.  Steve is with the Armed Citizens Legal Defense Network at www.armedcitizensnetwork.org.

Research, and critical thinking, show that the Stand Your Ground principle is a good thing.  Sad to see critical thinking and research so thinly applied by the media on this issue of late.

Your thoughts?

  1. What else would you expect from the Lame Stream Media?

As Rahm Emaunal liked to say “There is never a good Tradgedy or Disaster, the can’t be turned into “Political Gain”.

The whole Florida shooting has been distorted and used as an excuse for more anti-gun laws, and restrictions on the Second Amendment, and Constitution in general.

  2. Well…duh?

It’s main stream media – how often do we get any actual facts in those “news reports”? Especially, when it comes to firearms and their legitimate uses?

As long as I can recall, the media has rarely applied research and critical thinking. “Glocks- new plastic guns that people can sneak into airplanes and courtrooms!” “Black Talons- Copkilling dumdum rounds that chew through bodyarmor” etc.

As for the NYT piece, doesn’t surprise me at all. After the recent FL shooting, I’ve seen all sorts of sewage about SYG. Think my personal favorite is how the Brady bunch labels every mass-shooter as a CCW permitee.

Call me a luddite, I don’t have cable or satatile. Anything I want to watch I just get it on DVD. As for news, I stick to good unbiased sites and skip the rest. Keeps life simple.

  3. Sadly, our media (video and print) have let their standards relax quite a bit over the years. Lemme strike that….they’ve let their standards be SOLD over the years, their standards are exactly as high as whomever currently pays their paychecks require. My general take on the news (whenever I’m forced to watch it or happen to be in the same room as a TV tuned in to a news program) is that whatever they say, automatically assume you’re only getting about 25% of the story, and it will be extremely slanted. For every “expert” and “talking head” they bring in, that percentage drops. For every repeat of the same story, assume the facts will be muddled and slanted further, until “truth” and “fact” and “logic” slide right off onto the studio/newsroom floor.

  4. Interesting article.

It’s an unfortunate fact that research and critical thinking are and have been of least importance when it comes to “journalistic” reporting, especially with the increase of on-demand media viewship (i.e. “The Internet”). Sensationalism and hyperbole are what attracts the mass viewers, and in turn, what generates revenue.

The recent Zimmerman case seems to have exposed this disgusting disregard for critical thinking on a very deep level. Producers have even been fired, though I’m apt to believe that scapegoating might be a large part of that. I truly believe it’s a matter of time that the mainstream public is going to realize that they’re being lied to on a daily basis by those organizations that they’ve come to depend on so much.

    My two cents 😉

  5. Thanks for more reality here. I can’t count the times i’ve heard people taking emotional sides on this issue with little to no facts, simply cheering for the side that tells them what they want to hear. Sadly even armed with solid truths, most people have already made up their minds regardless of the facts in front of them.

  6. what is truly sad about this whole SYG debate, is that the sheeple are listening to the emotionally charged gun-control rhetoric – and, those attention-mongers who love the spotlight and crowds of cheering people, relish the power to sway public opinion in their favor. as a concealed carry person, i have always been diligent in avoiding any situation. it is a not something i take lightly, nor should anyone else, and those few that forget that, only hurt the rest of us law-abiding citizens.

  7. I think the media is doing less and less research and good reporting because there is a race to break the story.

  8. Here in Illinois we’re encouraged to vomit on our assailants. I don’t doubt that our new leader…strike that , Mayor of Chicago, will repeal that. That might bully a murderous 17-yr.-old.

  9. Obviously, there’s bigotry regarding guns and gun rights and gun laws. Bigotry and its pal, ignorance. The sad truth is that the media also show bigotry and ignorance with respect to a number of subjects. Shouldn’t Howie Kurtz address this on “Reliable Sources”? Can any liberal, conservative, Democrat or Republican stand for this yellow journalism from none other than the “Grey Lady”?

  10. The NYT article and its slant is business as usual. This sort of BS cannot be allowed to go unanswered. Thank God for credible folks like Mr. Harris who can and will present the facts. Thanks also for the links. They eventually led me to a great article at americanthinker.com titled “Taking Down the Second Amendment: The Connection between Fast and Furious and the Trayvon Martin Case”. A great job of detailing events of the case and tying in the FAF fiasco.

  11. Thanks to Steve Harris for his legal clarification. I really can’t make anymore comments except to say ” when it comes to NY Times just consider the source.

  12. Remember all the media retractions when Black Rhino ammo turned out to be a hoax? Me neither.

I recall the local paper warning us all to keep an eye on Florida when they first allowed shall issue ccw. Blood was supposed to pour through the streets when the peasants could go out armed.

Face it, the national news media is the propaganda arm of the DNC. I just let the subscription to the local daily lapse, if I wanted to be fed a heaping helping of ideological drivel, well, I’m sure that could be arranged for free.

Other problem, more subtle, has to do with being in the “post-modern” age where truth is relative. It is supposed to be about class/race/gender struggles to be understood as narratives. Making Zimmerman a white middle class bigot out to lynch a poor black kid was a narrative too good to pass up, the details were mere inconveniences. “The bigger truth” was what the media was after. That is the sort of thinking that holds it is fine to jail, fine, or harass someone innocent, if it is retaliation for someone else’s past crimes. Scary stuff.

  13. The NYT is honest journalism- just ask then, they’ll tell you. We know they are highly biased and ” untruthful ” so the question really is ” do they really understand SYG”. If not, they are too ignorant to be writing about it and should refrain. If they do it shows their lack of honesty and integrity and the depths of their deception and again should refrain from writing about it.
The NYT has gone from yellow journalism to brown.

  14. Speaking as a retired police officer who responded to many calls in progress. The Stand Your Ground Law was well needed in the State of Florida. People were actually getting killed and hurt retreating in fear using any type of self defence. This law was needed many years before it was implemented and it needs to stand now.
Unfortunately Zimmerman Vs. Martin case has shined a negative light on self defence in general using a firearm and this was mainly due to the LIBERAL BIASED lies and the likes of Sharpton and Jackson who use these type of cases to line their pockects.

  15. Mas,
The over reach by Federal prosecutors in the Zimmerman case is becoming comical.

They now are investigating his activities at the age of nine years old in an attempt to justify federal civil rights charges.

He has not yet been convicted of any FL. state charge.

The adjudicated case is being used to attack the Castile doctrine by anti-gun liberal activists.

What can be done at this point to prevent the improper influencing of a jury?

  16. One more point:
The very LIBERAL New York Times article is so flawed and filled with lies. It was written with one purpose to sway people into thinking this is a wild west law when in deed it is not. NYC anti gun laws has always allowed it’s population to be harmed by armed criminals while it’s Liberal anti gun politicians keep them unarmed.

  17. I don’t believe a thing I read in the New York Times, not even the weather – it’s become like the title of that Hollywood story, “Hello, He Lied” – they just can’t get it right because there are so many things fundamentally wrong upstairs.

  18. Shills… The more blantant than ever. The choice between good and evil keeps getting clearer.

After I worked at a college for a while I came to understand, that these people are willing believe many lies. It is easier to beleive all the lies than accept one truth. Because to believe that one truth unravels all the other lies! Thus unraveling thier life and require they change thier life.

  19. Mas, on my last post I really did not clarify why I wrote and sent you the article/video. It was not to blast law enforcement or the military. I strongly support LEOs, as I believe in what they do and have numerous friends and family members who are making and have made this profession their career choice. The point is can this happen with this administration? I am concerned that it could.

With Hillary and the UN small arms treaty being negotiated, my concern is that Obama will try to ram something through or around congress and confiscate our guns. It is apparent that this happened in New Orleans during Katrina.

I never thought something like this (or what happens in DC, chicago or New York City) would go on against the second amendment. And we have seen Obama not follow the rule of law, but no one seems to stand up and challenge him so his mandates just go on, unchecked.

Please, some thoughts. I hate to think of what might happen should someone break down my door in the name of “law”.

Thank you. I value your insight and calculated responses to difficult issues we all face.

  20. Mas,
I just found out today you’ll be just down the road from me (10 miles) in Centerton Arkansas in September.
Would love to meet you but the tuition would wipe me slick. Will there be any opportunities for you to meet folks at any other venues during that time?
I’m pleased you’ll be in the area anyway, NW Arkansas is a great place.

  21. There are cubic tons of research, and critical thinking done by the network news bureaus. The only problem is it is all about creating sensation, selling adtime, and market share. No one in journalism gives a damn, about anything else. They aren’t elected. The more folks they alienate the better for ratings.
