Why did I title this “Ferguson, Part I”?

Because we all KNOW there’s going to be more than “one part” to whatever happens when the Grand Jury announces their determination of the facts based on the testimony they’ve spent so long hearing.

As we all wait on tenterhooks for the determination of the Grand Jury, and for what happens next, we have to consider some basic facts.

Intelligence from the field has told Missouri’s Governor Nixon that he needs to call out the National Guard and have them ready.

Agenda-driven outside protesters are already there, and have been poised for quite some time. The protesters’ alliance encompasses many of the usual suspects in the race-baiting-for-money world, and more.  In a New Thing, the protesters have issued Rules of Engagement that they, uh, demand that the police follow: No protective gear allowed for cops, more than they’d usually wear, that sort of thing.  Uh, yeah…

Here’s a hint: when YOU propose “Rules of Engagement,” YOU are preparing to ENGAGE.

Some of the “protesters” are on the internet requesting donations of things like gas masks and, I’m told, even bullet-proof vests.  Huh.  Wonder what they’re planning to draw upon themselves…

I am hearing, “Don’t worry. It will be a peaceful demonstration.”  This from the same people who are talking about blocking highways (in bitterly cold winter weather) and keeping people from getting to and from work, ambulances from getting to hospitals, fire trucks from getting to fires, people from arriving at or departing from the St. Louis International Airport, etc. Keeping parents from picking up kids at school, and causing parents and kids alike who can’t make that connection, to panic.

I’m sorry, but that sounds to me very much like “disturbing the peace.”  Can anyone tell me how disturbing the peace of people who are not involved in the thing you are protesting is NOT a crime?  Can anyone tell me how, by definition, disturbing the peace is PEACEFUL?

Both sides seem to expect a verdict exonerating the officer who pulled the trigger. If it goes that way, I sincerely hope that people who have invested themselves heavily in potential violence protesting that verdict experience a sudden attack of massive self-control, and don’t do it.

But, a long cynicism-producing life tells me that this is not the most likely outcome.

If things “go south,” I can think of at least one cop (not me) who has suggested flamethrowers.

Many more observers, looking at the frigid weather in the Ferguson/St. Louis area – which many of us “in the business” believe may be a factor in the announcement being delayed this long – are of the opinion that fire hoses could come into play if extreme mob violence has to be contained.

I’m not recommending fire hoses, mind you, but given that the police in Ferguson have been shot at repeatedly since this whole thing began, and to the best of my knowledge the cops haven’t thrown anything but gas and rubber back, if things go violent a Night of the Frozen Ice Protesters might be preferable to another Kent State.

Readers, your input is welcome.

  1. my feeling is that there will be protests but no riots. i feel the community is being coached on non-violence and they’ve already got it out of their system. the “rules of engagement” is their way of keeping it between gentlemen — law enforcement should trust the community to remain civil and not show up to intimidate the people because if they do, people will act out what’s expected of them.

i think spontaneous outrage has a message and is rebellious in nature. that is the previous riot. being outraged on queue is just dramatic acting and i believe people there are less inclined to do it initially. this is the scenario now. if there will be rioting, it will be after a while (day or two) of escalation, which i think the community leaders are trying to prevent.

  3. When protesters are killed they will be treated as martyrs just as Trayvon Martin and Michael Brown have been. The rage against ‘The Man’ and his unfair treatments of blacks will be inflamed. The news media will be complicit in this.

You do not want to be one who must shoot a protester.

Here is a piece of advice I got from two people who have retired from FEMA: Prepare for a siege. Make sure you have food, water, and fuel. Whatever you do, don’t go to the store or anywhere else during a civil disturbance.

Reginald Denny was in the relative safety of the cab of his truck during the riots in Los Angeles in 1992. He was working – driving his truck. He was stopped, dragged from his vehicle, and beaten nearly to death.

  7. One of the great strengths of the coomon rule of law is its individualistic treatment of those accused of crimes. Thus, the family is not held responsible for the actions of one family member etc.

However, most of the world, throughout history, has treated people as representatives of groups whether family, clan, tribe, party, etc. Thus, any offense by a member of a group means that all members of that group can be punished. Thus, feuds such the Hatfield and McCoy family, Scottish clan feuds, current feuds between Shiite, Sunni, Christians, and Jews in the Middle East, etc.

What we see in Ferguson is the demand that Officer Wilson and other LEO’s with their families be punished collectively–thus for the rioters–any person is not a member of their group is fair game. What generally happens is innocent people get hurt with absolutely no connection to whatever event spurred the feud which often worsens the counter reaction and so forth.

What has been depressing to me is that the political leaders and the media, who know better, have taken sides so that if the rule of law results differ from the mob’s expectations, riots will ensue. All for a temporary desire to placate a voting bloc. Instead, true leaders would have stressed the need to find out the facts of what happened, trust the rule of law and the grand jury system to protect the innocent and hold the guilty responsible.

Instead, the political leaders and the media brought gasoline to the fire.

  9. Massad I am interested in how you feel the armed protesters at the Bundy Ranch should have been treated. I hear a lot of condemnation of Ferguson protesters but many of my fellow 2nd amendment supporters don’t condemn those that supported Bundy Ranch and pointed firearms at federal agents.

  14. Mas,

Would you please advise us on what to do should a group of “protesters” block your car with our families inside? It is a totally scary thing which has happened most recently in Ferguson. (It also happened in the L.A. Riots!)

    What would you do?

    Thanks so much!

  18. Tim, it will depend on the subtleties of what the courts call “the totality of the circumstances.” Protesters, milling in the streets and even yelling, but presenting no direct threat? Wait it out. Rioters, trying to overturn your vehicle, threatening deadly force to all inside? Accelerate.

Bernard, I don’t think the Bundy Ranch thing was Lexington or Concord. I’m glad there were restrained trigger fingers on both sides.

  20. Tim,- another tip-, know the turn radius of your vehicle and never position your vehicle so close to the one in front of you that you can’t pull around it without backing up.

Have window screen installed on the side windows to prevent them from disintegrating into “diamonds” when impacted by someone attempting to access the inside of of your vehicle.

When you’ve made the decision to escape using your vehicle, your vehicle becomes a weapon capable of inflicting serious injury or death. The justification for using it in defense of your life is no different than using a firearm.

  22. Mas,

    Thanks so much for responding!

Your teachings are finally sinking in with me! I, too thought to simply wait it out unless banging on the car/windows occurs.

I also re-read Chapter 9 of In The Gravest Extreme, where you talk about road blockades and how to handle them. Thank you for your teachings and desire to help others – Saint Mas!

    Sincerely,

    Tim Arrington

P.S. Ferguson, MIssouri is just two communities away from my home and office. What used to be labeled “paranoid rhetoric” of the NRA is now quite reasonable way of thinking to people living near Ferguson. I predict armed, good citizens will not tolerate aggressive acts of thugs in the coming weeks.

And, Wayne LePierre is correct, “The ONLY thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.”

  28. Anyone who thinks that mob violence isn’t going to happen in Ferguson WHEN (not if) the grand jury refuses to indict, is delusional at best. Even despite the pleas, and how sincere they are is open to debate, from the parents of the late thug.

I’ve felt for a long time fire hoses would be the answer, but you can bet the rent the first thing you will see on TV from the lame stream media is old footage of the race riots when cops used fire hoses on the demonstrators.

And with an increase of citizens having armed themselves in anticipation of more rioting, burning and destruction, there will probably also be incidents of people shooting rioters and those who came to Ferguson with the sole intent of violence and destruction. How that all shakes out is another story entirely.

The one thing you can count on is the media getting it wrong.

  32. I don’t think there is any way to win this one. This has been an engineered PR ploy from the time the first organizer could get to the scene and they had obviously been hunting for an cause all summer.

I wonder what the media will say if the race riot that they have engineered becomes something more. Mobs have a habit of getting out of hand. A hundred times something like this could happen and it would peter out with a few dead, a few homes burned and some cars overturned. But you never know. Just because you aren’t anywhere near Ferguson, don’t let your guard down.
