More is coming out about the murder of Sgt. Tim Chapin in Chattanooga, which was discussed here a few days ago.
We now learn that the killer, wounded by police gunfire, was captured by an armed citizen. Harlan Murray was involved in a yard sale nearby when he heard the gunfire, and ushered the good people safely into the house, where he accessed a .22 caliber revolver.
Moments later, Murray confronted the suspect, and ordered him to the ground at gunpoint. Debilitated by police bullets, the murderer reluctantly complied. Chattanooga cops quickly rushed to the scene and took over.
Kudos to Brother Murray, more living proof of why I’ve always felt the law-abiding armed citizen and the police are natural allies.
I’ve already suggested to a friend on CPD that the cops chip in to buy Mr. Murray a larger caliber handgun.
Link to the story is here.
Did you note in the story where the dreaded AK15 makes an appearance?
Good for the citizen.
Amazingly, the cops didn’t shoot the armed citizen like the antis claim will happen. Imagine that.
He did follow the first rule of a gun fight and that is to have a gun. If a man was armed I am not sure I would confront him with just a 22 caliber handgun.
As for the police not shooting him I would like to hear what happened when the police arrived. I would also like to know how Mr. Harlan Murray conducted himself when the Officers arrived. There could be some great learning points here.
Good recommendation, Mas.
Actually, any place us common men could donate a little to that fund?
BRAVO Mr Murray!!!! Thanks for the update mas.
Ah yes the good ole ak15 bushmaster. the MSM shows its vast ignorance again, but then they don’t proof read any more either. Either too cheap to hire a proof reader or more likely they’re just never wrong don’t ya know!
Wasn’t he “debilitated from police bullets” from the cops? Why the need for another takedown? Isn’t this a good way to get shot by the police in friendly fire incident?
I would be willing to kick in some $$$$ for ammo. Just let me know the caliber.
I think your suggestion to the CPD is an outstanding one.
“I’ve already suggested to a friend on CPD that the cops chip in to buy Mr. Murray a larger caliber handgun.”
He’s best off with something he can HIT with consistently – then the best stopping power available!
Only hits count! The ability to rapidly get back on target counts a lot, too. He should try a .38 Special K-frame with steel frame to get all of this – and stopping power.
Well done Mr. Murray!
Strike Mr. Murray a medal.
Matt, who’s to say he can’t hit consistently with something heavier? It’s just that the .22 was the only gun available.
A 9mm would probably be a good bet. Tame on the recoil but has enough energy to penetrate sufficiently. Something solid, reliable, and commonly issued like a Glock 17/19 or an M&P9 Fullsize/Compact.
Like others here, I’m looking forward to more details. I wonder if Mr. Murray realized the danger of holding someone a gunpoint. Regardless, that man deserves a medal. If not a medal, a good handgun.
I hope events like this will reach Police Instructors and encourage them to cover armed citizens in training for cadets. From what I’ve heard from my CCW class in CO, most Officers have no training on dealing with CCW holders.
The outcome for Mr. Murray could have been disastrous. Here is a gun fight with all LEOs where things went south very quickly after an officer yelled GUN !

What sad instead main stream news covering story like this. We get story more like this about nut job killing policemen and normal people high school kids collage kids with evil gun evil high cap assault clips which Brady Campaign speak for any hand gun mag care more than ten rounds in it. They have ant democrats tell people how much safer world would be if no one had guns. Yet this proves with out doubt if want stop some one from killing people police with gun need have one your self. It good case showing that police can not do it alone they some times help from poeple not other caps. Which many ant gun people do not seem under stand.
The outcome for anyone nearby had Murray not been there could’ve been worse. Look, we can armchair all we want about caliber, conditions, or other incidents that didn’t end the same way ’til we’re blue in the face (or sore in the fingers)…the point is an armed citizen made a stand and won. End of story.
Thanks, as always, Mas, for posting.

Off topic but- HAPPY APRIL 19TH. That was yesterday, blog readers may know the significance of that ,but every American ought to.
April 19th is the dated credited as the official start of the uprising of the Jews in the Warsaw Ghetto. Even poorly armed, underfed and outnumbered, they finally decided fighting to the death was preferable to dying as sheep.
19apr1775, the shot heard ’round the world was fired. American militamen stood against overwelming British forces and the revolutionary war was started.
Ayoob, I do not hate cops, I use to be one in Idaho. What I have seen in the past few years, are that some in uniform get the god complex. I know that you know some just like that. These guy’s are the one’s that leave the sour taste in the public’s mouth. I had a time when I was helping a little girl get her clothing out of her house, her Mom and Dad both had restraining orders on each other. Well about an hour in the police showed up and ask what was going on, I told them. I also pulled out mi ID and started to hand it to him. At this point he pushed it away and asked if I had any weapons on me, as he grabbed my hands and started searching me. Well I called the station and ask for the desk Sergent told him my story, and was told there wasn’t anything that could be done that he had a right to protect himself. Now where were my rights?
Thank You
