Ah, a fresh new calendar!
This being a guns and shooting blog and all, what plans do you have in that vein for 2015?
What new firearm(s) do you hope to acquire?
Any gun modification projects in the works?
Thinking about trying some shooting sport in which you haven’t yet competed? Try an Appleseed maybe?
Going afield after some game you haven’t hunted before?
Any particular class you’re thinking of taking?
You’re invited to share your shooting plans here!
1) I’d like to get a bolt action 308
2) I’d like to take some medical training
3) I’d like to find someone to introduce me to reloading to see if I’d enjoy it before buying the gear.
4) I’m going to hunt whitetail deer for the first time.
My shooting plans for 2015 will center around equipment and training for “out there” shooting. My current stable is devoid of anything capable of making long range accurate shots.
The MAG 80 class in Illinois is looking good. I plan on being there.
I need to break in a new AR15 and me as well as I have never used as AR in a
training class. Looking forward to June.
Thinking of getting a new hunting rifle. Maybe a marlin 30-30. Hot my first deer this year and want to get into hunting everything now. Small game, turkey and more white tail.
Acquisitions? Considering the Kel-Tec PMR-30 and the corresponding carbine. Looks like a great combo for woods and home.
Other than those, I will be doing annual maintenance and upgrades to the weapons I already have. A new scope here, a better sling there etc. Lots more range time as well. Classes will be simple, looking at finally getting to an Appleseed event.
I’m going to take up reloading.
Happy New Year to you Mas.
I’d like to attend as many NSSF Rimfire Challenge matches as possible in 2015, and introduce my son to this family friendly competition at one of the local matches if we think he’s ready. More info on these events can be found here. http://www.nssf.org/rimfire
I didn’t get around to this in 2014, but for 2015 I’d like to raise awareness of the Winchester/NRA Marksmanship Qualification Program for Defensive Pistol by doing a video series about it. Personally, I’d like to earn Distinguished Expert for Defensive Pistol 1 and 2. More info on the program can be found here. http://mqp.nra.org/
Mas – I don’t think there is enough room here for my “wish list,” but I’ll give it a go:
1. get some good training.
2. increase live fire activities (I can tell a big difference in my dry-fire, now that I have carpal tunnel behind me!)
3. get new sights for my Glock 30 S – advise me, fellas. I’m leaning towards either Mepros or XS Big Dots. Also, some grips – again, advice, please – Talons? or ??
4. although I’ve been very pleased with my Blue Ridge kydex holster, I am looking for something that allows even “deeper” concealment, but surprisingly, there is very little out there for a 30 S – again: “help!”
5. somehow, some WAY, get my beautiful bride involved with my ever-growing love for firearms and firearm-related stuff. She is a 2nd Amendment backer, so that bridge has been crossed.
I’ll quit…for now.
Any/all help and advice will be greatly appreciated, guys!
IF you must go out tonight, be careful, guys!
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
I have slowly acquired all the equipment to start reloading in 2014 so 2015 will be my first attempts at reloading. Not sure about purchasing any more firearms as we picked up two in 2014 but I’d like to build an AR and will at least start accumulating parts for it in 2015.
Am so glad I follow you on Twitter; your blogs are always interesting and I find we are always on “the same page”. I plan to continue my 3 to 4 visits per year to a facility in Nevada, and in 2015 I plan to repeat the 4 day rifle and shotgun courses, and take one or two 2-day handgun skill builders. My nephew( Lt. Col US Army) has suggested that I might enjoy IDPA and I plan to look into that in the late Spring (I am a tax accountant and have no time before the end of April). I recently acquired a Walther PPQ in 9mm and flat out love it! It’s my first 9mm, and it performed flawlessly for the initial 800+ rounds put through it. What they say about the trigger is true; out of the box it is far superior to my Glock 22 (post trigger job) and my XD. So….as long as I have the holsters and mag pouches, might as well get it in the .40, right?
Best wishes for the new year. Let’s hope that increasing numbers of people can gain/regain respect for the badge.
I’m hoping to take a MAG-20 live fire class with a revolver. I’m a firearms instructor, but am not as comfortable with a revolver as I’d like to be. Hopefully, you’ll offer the class in the Midwest in 2015, preferably Iowa, hint hint 🙂
Well, I’d like to train with Dave Spaulding and Grant Cunningham when they both come to AZ in a couple of months…
This was posted on our “Local Range” website. thought you might get a kick out of it
Anyone shooting more than 5 years should get this.
Jeff Cooper, Ray Chapman, and Mas Ayoob were at a restaurant enjoying dinner together years ago. Suddenly, a scoundrel runs in wearing a ski mask and yelling, “This is a robbery!”
A rolling thunder of gunshots explodes from the three instructors’ table. Soon thereafter, the police arrive and ask each man what happened.
“I fired two to the body, one to the head, and killed the gremlin,” says Cooper.
Checking his watch, Chapman says, “I drew and fired six rounds into his chest in 1.8 seconds.”
Mas Ayoob surreptitiously pockets two now-empty snubby revolvers and says, “Yup, they got him!”
Train hard & stay safe…
The Mrs. (Susan) and I both hope to earn our Rifleman patches from Appleseed in 2015. We hope to shoot regularly at the Carmi (IL) Rifle Club. Susan really likes the Rock River AR she got for Christmas.
I’d like a Ruger GP-100 Match Champion, or perhaps a CZ-75B stainless. Really want to get my CCW this coming year.
1) Hoping to get a SIG P220 in 10mm if they start making them.
2) More range time practice.
3) Try out USPSA
4) Continue going to IDPA matches
5) Try and get more people involved in the shooting sports!
Our local club is sponsoring a GSSF match/event this summer. I’m thinking of getting involved. I
And I would like to attend another MAG class this year.
I think Dave wins the innertuubes with that story! I mainly am stuck do to finances, and the fact I WILL NOT COMPLY with the Unlawful, Intolerable Acts imposed on me by the State of Md. Aquiring ammo and throwing out political crooks (but I repeat myself) are the order of the day. If resources improve my butt’s outta Mordor South so fast it’s rediculous.
Well Mas, I’m too old to go out in the woods alone, no hunting expeditions. Not a heck of a lot of money so training classes are out. I am looking for a 1908 Colt .380 hammerle$$ to replace one I lost to burglers years ago.
Looks like 2015 is going to find me in my backyard burning up a lot of my reloaded .45 ACP, affordable recreation
So many things to do, so little time and even less money. Yah, i’ve got a pile of projects to do, but the main ones are catch one more MAG20 classroom and more range time. Anything else would be icing on the cake. Maybe if I win the lottery…if I ever buy a ticket.
P224, or M&P 9c if the money doesn’t show up!
Started Laser dry fire target shooting on a video screen in prep for a possible 3 gun in the Spring!
I’d like to go to MAG 30 in Kiss.,Fl. And give my guns their yearly bath. Please I’m not that bad , the ones in the safes. And would like to do the MAG 120 in Live Oak in Dec . HINT, HINT. Mas isn’t it nice for us to make your schedule for you. ? Now I’ll stick my finger in my cheek as if I told a lame joke . Happy New Year & stay safe.
I want to put a lot more rounds downrange. That means I will be doing a lot more reloading. My CHL is being processed at this time and my wife is continuing to improve her handgun skill. I want to buy a left-handed compound bow and start bow hunting next year.
Ruger Blackhawk Single Seven 327 Federal Magnum
Hand made Recurve Bow.
I do want to thank the Arkansas State Police. My CHCL renewal paperwork got lost somewhere between the post office and the CHCL processing desk. With only 11 days until mine expired I got in touch, asked if they were about to issue when I got the bad news.
They jumped right on it and managed to get my license to me with 4 days to spare. Yes, I had to follow procedures but there was NO foot dragging in Little Rock. Now those are professional public servants!!
Thanks guys!
Tom, that’s one wish I can grant for the new year: we’re on for a MAG-120 in Live Oak, FL December 2015. Should be up on the website soon, if it isn’t already: http://massadayoobgroup.com .
Lew, good luck in finding that classic 1908 Colt. I know what it’s like to miss an object you “loved and lost.” I’ve got a yen for an Ithaca Deerslayer 12 gauge pump, with rifle sights and the short 20″ barrel, that I still kick myself for having sold long ago. Now that I’m getting older and feebler, it will be even cooler if I can find one in 20 gauge…
I will be attending Ayoob’s Use of Deadly Force Instructor course at FAS in July and working on getting Mike Seeklander out to Portland to do his Firearm Instructor Development Course (F.I.D.C.) in September. Also figuring out the right optics to put on my Marlin 1894C.
HOO HOO !!!
Well, for me I already have plenty of firepower in the usual.45, .40, .357mag, & AR’s so I hope to “upgrade” to a nice Henry lever-action .22. Look out, you scumbag squirrels!
Did something I’ve never done before- I purchased a membership at a local indoor range. That will allow/force me to keep up a more disciplined schedule of shooting. Recently bought a Delta Elite in 10mm. Since I’ll be reloading for it as well as for my 44 mag. the year will be noisy as well as fun.
More Rifle Practice, especially .223 and .22lr.
More reloading
Handgun Practice up the Yazhoo
I have learned a lot reading your blog especially about deadly force. Thank you.
1- Shoot my new to me Colt MKIII .357.
2- Shoot my NIB Glock G26.
3- Shoot my new to me M&P 40.
4- Become a better shot.
5- Get my carry permit.
6- Get a trust and SBR my AR pistols, maybe get a suppressor.
7- Finish building a .308 AR.
8- Get optics for the rest of my rifles.
9- Stop spending so much money on guns….NOT.
New toys: the HK MR762A1. I have already acquired the scope for it, an ACOG.
Modification: funny you should mention the Ithaca Deerslayer 12 gauge. I replaced the broken factory rear sight with a Williams. However, I cannot sight it in with the factory front sight, so I need to use the Williams front sight as well. Except it takes some fitting to get it in there.
Training: I will see you in Harrisburg, in Easton, and in Live Oak for the MAG-120.
I’m finally going to by a .22 pistol in a few weeks. I actually found some ammo! I’ve been taking a lot of newbies to the range and needed something besides 9mm. Plus, just fun to shoot!
Weapons retention class next month.
Forgot…need to get an Apex duty kit put on my M&P 9FS. Trigger reset is very mushy, not nice and crisp like my Shield (carry pistol).
Want to try Hog hunting this year , and need something to do the job with .
Thinking 30-30 Winchester 94 or a Marlin 336 should be about right for me.
I do like the looks of the “Yellow Boy ” but I think that would be a little bit overboard for the job at hand.
Happy New Years one and all !!!
I am signed up for the winterseed shoot in Boone, NC in Feb. This is an Appleseed event and the special Winterseed Patch will be awarded those who shoot 210 or better. It will be a challenge to shoot in sub freezing weather with possibly a foot or more of snow on the ground. Yes this will be outdoors! It’s a challenge but that winterseed patch will look good beside my regular Rifleman’s Patch. Happy New Year to you and Gail.
I’m like Gene Smith. I want a Ruger Blackhawk Single Seven 327 Federal Magnum. Almost .357 ballistics in a small frame single six package. I think that’s a neat combo for light packing and hiking. I’m just not sure what other niche it would fill – but it would be fun gun.
Need to pull the trigger on learning to reload. Got all the stuff just now need the guts.
Also a Mag-40 is rumored to be coming to town. If it does I plan to be front row center!
Going to be trying out my Ruger Scout BA rifle in .308 Win on the range, and may put a scope on it, depending on how I shoot with the iron sights. A Happy, Healthy New Year to all!
Mas, Happy New Year to you. I went to Gunsite last year and want to go back to the Carbine course. I have a SW M&P 9mm (everyday carry), Glock 41 Gen 4 and just bought my 14 year old son a Glock 21 (he and I shoot at least once a month). I try and shoot every week at the local indoor range and in 2015 I’d like to do the MAG 40 course. Want to get better with my shotgun and this year will invest in an AR15
Right now it looks like I will be spending most of the new year scrounging for powder suitable for reloading handgun ammo. Bullseye, hs-6, titegroup w-231 etc. All are scarce as hens teeth. Unless, you want to go on Gunbroker and pay a high-jacker his ransom.
At the risk of high-jacking your blog, Mas, I just heard of a shooting in Idaho by a 2 year old with his mother’s concealed weapon in a Walmart store.
Also, interesting story at http://www.youbelongtome.net. All about murder in 1952 in Live Oak.
Happy New Year to everyone and Safe.
Happy New Year, Mas!
I’d like to try my hand at longer range shooting. I’m thinking a Savage 10PC is in my future.
I’d like to find some classes does get for out of practice nervous nellies (that’s me). I also need a .22 for varmints. I’m tired of wasting my .38 ammo on them.
Happy New Year, Mas!
I am working on preparing for MAG80 in Kankakee, IL this June and am really looking forward to it. See you there Don W.
Don – PA.,
In response to your number “4.” You asked about deep concealment for a Glock 30S. I have a Glock 30. Kramer makes a T-shirt called “Confidante.” It fits snugly and goes underneath your undershirt. It has a pocket under each arm, and velcro straps to keep gun and magazine snug. Definitely deep concealment, but slow on the draw.
This year hoping to get a Henry big boy (44mag) and a Glock 19…. Not likely but if the money is there a S&W 29 but that may be a 2016 item. As for hunting…. A deer would be nice…lol. Had great luck in years past at the same location but this year… Nothing at all.
I’d really like it if Glock were to come out with a single stack 9 mm that would work as a pocket pistol. I’ve also been shooting IDPA with a a Glock 19. It may be time to bump up to a Glock 34. Any input on the Glock 34 would be appreciated.
Mike In cny–I have had a Henry Big Boy for several years now. You don’t say what your intentions are for it. For me I buy guns for there beauty, accuracy or just plain fum to shoot or for competition.
The Big Boy is certainly adequate for deer or wild hogs out to 150 yds or so. Its beauty is still reasonable in price. Accuracy with American Eagle 240 gr HP is about 4″ at 100yds. You could probably do better with a scope, mounted on the barrel. However, that would detract from its looks.
I mounted an aperture or peep sight on the tang. I only had to drill 1 extra hole. It can be folded down when not being used. I have it sighted in for 100 yds and at 50 yds I use the stock buckhorn sight.
I got the sight from Brownells. Get their catalog and start to drool. I can’t say enough good things about Brownells they stand behind what they sell.
If you are recoil sensitive you will need a squaw bag for the shoulder. That brass butt plate really digs into the skin. Hope you get your wish.
Train, train, train. Bump up my semi-annual defensive pistol courses to at least 3, maybe 4 in 2015. Get back into IDPA, at least 9 matches and upgrade from marksman to sharpshooter in SSP.
Brian, lots of G34’s in IDPA…everyone loves’em, mainly for the longer sight radius. I also shoot a G19 and will remain with that and a G30 occasionally. Folks that shoot the G34 are usually serious competitors instead of “shoot what you carry” guys like me who shoot for defensive skills development rather than pure competition. If you like the competitive aspect of IDPA and are already shooting a Glock, a G34 should serve you well.
Don’t need much in the way of shootin’ irons, but may pop for a Ruger GP100 if one becomes unavoidable. Oh, a new safe, Champion Trophy or Medalist, is in the works.
Lastly, help my daughter-in-law get some good training leading to her CCL, and maybe have her join me in an IDPA match. She’s already a very good shot for her experience level.
