Back in the early 1970s when Richard Davis created the soft, concealable body armor that “bullet-proofed” America’s police, Davis told me I was the first cop in my state to order one of his vests. For the next forty-plus years I never put on the uniform without a vest, and unless I was wear-testing another maker’s product, it was always either Richard’s Second Chance brand product or, much later after Richard retired from the industry, one of his son Matt’s Armor Express vest.

The time came when I was damn glad I did, discussed in the video linked belw.

Matt started a new company this year, WarBird, with not only a broad line of latest-tech armor but also state of the art active hearing protection and eye pro. I’m wearing the latter now when I’m shooting or teaching, and one of his WarBird vests is now my go-to when I feel the need to armor up.

You can see and hear what I think of his vests, and why smart armed citizens should have them:

or watch video here.

For more info on WarBird products, go to WarBirdPro.com.

If Matt’s name sounds familiar, he’s the guy who now runs my all-time favorite national shooting match, which his dad started as the Second Chance Shoot in the mid-1970s. If it tells you anything, it’s the only such match I’ve attended and competed in thirty times.  It’s called The Pin Shoot now, and you can find info at www.pinshoot.com.

  1. I also like the fact about Second Chance body armor that if you tested it with your or other animal they would replace it for free because of the testing that you did.

Totally wasted efgort not being captioned!
Many of us are deaf enough we can’t hear whats being said.. past time you smarten up to that fact.

If you hover your mouse over the video window a YouTube link appears in the lower right corner of the video window. Click on that link and that will take you to this video on YouTube. You can then click on the CC (Closed Caption) icon on the bottom of the video and auto-generated subtitles will run. They’re pretty accurate.

    • YT auto-captioned this video. Look at the bottom of the video. If the “CC” box is white, click it for the auto-generated captions. They’re not perfect, but they help me.

  3. Met Richard once and saw his “shoot himself” demo. Tested swatches with everything my club had. it stopped it all. Wore one everyday of my career. Still have one, just in case.

  4. Damn, am I glad you posted this! Much better prices than most others and same quality level. I’ve still got my most recent-but still dated, expect it’s till good-and it looks like the carriers will fit. Gotta email them.

Also, for curiosity’s sake, want to find the test swatch from 1990 and whack it again.
