Well, the good news is, the likelihood of violent post-election civil disturbance just went down: those who made the threats to do so, just lost their motive.

For gun owners, the bad news is obvious: a long-time opponent of gun owners’ civil rights will now perceive himself to have a mandate to carry out that part of his agenda, which he so carefully avoided during his first term.

My own deepest concern is what is going to happen with the Supreme Court. We will see multiple new Justices put forth soon. We need to let those who represent us on Capitol Hill know where we stand on that. President Obama made it starkly clear toward the end of the debates that he wanted to reinstate the “Assault Weapons Ban,” and we need to remind those elected officials who speak for us where we stand on that, too.

A few months ago when the Republican platform was announced, there were things in it that appalled me.  I told my significant other, “They’ve just killed themselves.”  I wish it had not been prophetic.  But those things are outside my purview as the “gun guy” at the Backwoods Home blogs, so I’ll discuss it no further.

It’s gonna be interesting to see what the final figures are, and whether those who went “third party” did a “Perot spoiler” thing again or not…

  1. I told you so. I’m not so worried about gun control. He’s still got to deal with a Republican House. The whole Supreme Court thing is worrisome, though, but it may or may not come to pass. We shall see.

  2. SCOTUS appointments may be the scariest thing that we see the next 4 years. We need to make sure that Scalia and Kennedy are taking their vitamins and getting plenty of exercise. They absolutely have to last another 4 years.

  3. What a sad day for America. I fear for our Constitution in general, and the 2nd Amendment in particular. The damage that Obama can do by appointing liberal judges to the Supreme Court, the gun control measures he intends on supporting, the destruction of our economy, our loss of stature in the eyes of the world, are all things that we may never be able to recover from.

The only positive note on this mournful day is that my wife just texted me that I should “Go get yourself some guns today.” I’m not 100% sure if she was serious, but who could fault me for running with it! I do have a hankering for another 1911 and a Springfield Socom Scout…among others.

  4. I contend that Fast and Furious and the “multiple sales reporting” bullcrap doesn’t count as “careful avoidance,” but yes- OTHER than that, I agree.

Already seeing gun and gun accessory prices going up in some places. =

  5. Stop nominating vapid, kleptocrats bent on the continuing financial rape of you, me and everyon else. Start minding your own business when it comes to what two consenting adults do in their bedroom. Quit re-electing the same damn assholes whole put us in this situation. Blaming a third party for your loss is childish. The libertarians pulled in an insignificant number lasr night. They never had a chance with a butt-hurt republican as their nominee. If you want me to vote republican, purge the party and grow up.

  6. Well, the progressives won again, which proves that the progressives are now the establishment.

I don’t think there were enough third party votes to have created a spoiler effect. But then again, I also beleive there were machinations going on behind the scene to make me wonder what was really going on.

As far as firearms go I think we will see about what we have seen in the past. We should expect to see a clinton style AWB, continued harrassment of gun owners by the BATFE and difficulties importing non “sporting” weapons. We will also see the electorate destroy senators and representatives that vote for these measures in the mid-terms, we will also see Amercian manufactures redouble their efforts to work around them.

We do need an American manufacturer of AK47s, complete rifles, not just parts builds. Maybe could make SKS as well.

  7. I hope yout predictions prove wrong. It looks lime the nation is evenly split in ideology and any future battle will prove mightily difficult.

  8. Post election violence after a Romney win would have 1) torn the country apart, and 2) destroyed the Democratic Party. It would have also been dangerous for us as gun owners because not everyone on the right is our friend.

Now that the danger of that is past, I, too, am worried about future Supreme Court appointees. Given Da One’s antipathy to law abiding gun owners and especially to those of us licensed to carry, I can only imagine the sort anti-gun ideolidiots he would appoint. While an overturning of McDonald or Heller would likely have little effect on us in Oklahoma and some other states, overturning the precedent could well have a chilling effect on gun rights in other areas.

    “Eternal vigilance…”

  9. Ok, so Romney snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.

I hope we learned a lesson. In hindsight, watching primary reruns is quite telling now that we know the outcome.

But my greatest wish now, Mas, is that your wonderful column, your once or thrice weekly installment into my gun life will again set its sights on guns.

The past few months were a B movie about politics that I’d just as soon forget. We now know how the movie ended and will work with what we’ve got, and got left.

I hate to say it, but if I want to read about politics, there are thousands of choices. But when I want to read about guns, there’s only one choice. Some guy with the name Ayoob.

  10. DOOMED! Guns and justices aside (witch are bad enough problems ) obama’s spending will in all likely hood throw us over the fiscal cliff. Unfettered spending, credit downgrades, a fed that said it will keep up it’s policies even though they’re not working. That’s just a start. If you aren’t a prepper get going. And Bengazi makes me sick. Free cell phones and food stamps did this country in.

  11. You said it, mas.

The official republican platform simply buried them.

Abortion: An agreed non-issue, until the supreme court sees fit to review its previous ruling. Even talking about this alienates a large chunk of the female vote.

Immigration: Taking the hard-line on immigration just lost you the Latino vote, who are otherwise generally very christian-conservative.

Just these two together were easily enough to lose the election, and there’s little excuse for it.

  12. Molon Labe….Come and Take Them….I dare ya. They want my guns: Fine. I’ll give’em to ’em…Bullets First!

  13. Perot? There were only 3 million votes separating,,,,, that means if 1.5 had changed. Yes, we got peroted as a nation.
Unfortunately when we dig to the very bottom of the schmuck pile, there is always an $100 bill. All the schmucks are the same. The only difference is the winner gets to appoint Hillary as a lifetime Supreme Court Justice (her pay for taking the Bengazi flak.) and probably 2 more. Then in his third term he will……….

  14. I’d like to comment on Marc-WI on cell phones. IMO Listen before you all get nutz……. the real downfall of the USA started when women got to vote (1916?)…. that is the same time that MEN abdicated their authority as husbands and leaders of the family and began to watch football and get drunk. Think about it.

  15. I am going to comment about the abortion issue being a non-issue:

Time for everyone to get a real handle on this situation.

Everyone needs to see pictures of a fetus with its head crushed and decapitated. Then you tell yourself over and over that is is NOT a BABY and see if you think it is a NON – ISSUE.

If you can look at those pictures and not be sick, you are already dead.

Even IUDs are abortion devices. They kill the fetus.

  16. @Patrick: Mas lives in Florida. Has for some time now.

Here in Oregon there have been efforts in the past to ban lawful concealed carry permit holders from carrying on school grounds. Those efforts have been defeated because the Republicans had enough votes to block those attempts.

This election changed all that and the Democraps now have a majority in the House.

It is expected that bills will be introduced next year in the legislature to change the carry law. The Democrap govenor has said that if such a bill crosses his desk he will sign it. 🙁

The hoplophobes really do believe that eliminating lawful carry will prevent mayhem with firearms by monsters on school grounds. Permit holders of course are the most LEAST likely to do such things.

There is a book out that says liberals are mentally ill. They truly are.

  17. It is time for us to stop supporting Republicans and switching to supporting Libertarians. As long as Republicans keep acting the way they are they do not deserve to be in the White House.

  18. I mostly agree with brewerbob. As soon as a major party start respecting the Constitution of United States & the Rule of Law (& minding thier own business, which means out of the Boardroom the Bedroom, the Gun Room and individuals bodies), then I’ll vote for them to. Oh wait, that would be the Libertarian Party. And I did.

As I posted elsewhere, I’m sure glad I voted my principles and didn’t “waste” my vote. You know, waste it; like most other Coloradoans who went went with the Crony Corporatocric duopoly did; because its not like the race was called before Colorado came in. Oh, wait….

As long as the masses continue to vote for the same to corrupt duopoly, we will continue to get the same corrupt duopoly. Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result is, at after all, the definition of insanity.

  19. I enjoy this blog but I’m not a one issue voter. For those looking for verbal ammo to use against the President should he seek to limit firearms ownership, I would find a video clip broadcast on ABC News tonight. The reporter was talking about how Obama’s daughters had grown up and one might start dating. The President said something like that he knew his daughter would never go out on a date and get into a car driven by a drunk guy because she was protected by guys with guns (ie. Secret Service, Dk if he said that specifically). In any event, that’s a pretty cool statement to use to remind him that not only those in power and their families deserve to be protected by firearms.

  20. Mas moved to Florida dude!! All I can say
is God help us all. Mas, keep up the good
Work. Look forward to each of your installments.
Will see you soon! Me and my brother are
Gonna take Mag-80 again with you. Love ya,
    Brother! Keep up the fight!

  21. I moved to Florida from NY state in 1972 with my parents as a teen. When I finished High School I entered law enforcement my life long passion. 25 years later I retired. I went on to earn a Bachelors degree in management while working and raising a family while enjoying hunting and shooting matches.

The State of Florida was so nice and peaceful I learned to shoot here and my love of guns began here when I was 12. I began to hunt, target shoot this was a great all American state with little to no crime. After watching the elections results of last night I am sick how Florida has become. We have a lot of rift raft living here here now, bleeding heart liberals, lazy people who would prefer to sell drugs as opposed to work, and all want hand outs. The Florida I knew and worked in is no more and it is a crying shame. This is also the reason we are seeing so much crime in Florida these days.

  22. So, how many Rolling Rocks to get you to expound on your opinion? I’m buying. Inquiring minds want to know.

  23. The majority of American voters are moderates. If you only attemp to appeal to the far right then you are sure to fail. Ryan, with his fringe plans for Medicare and his possible interest in outlawing in-vitro fertilization alienated so many voters.

My wife has a condition that is forcing us to use IVF as our only hope of having children. How can I vote for a candidate that wants to make it impossible to be a father? I love guns, make no mistake, but I would destroy all of mine for the chance to have a child.

This all led me to do a terrible thing this year: I did not cast a vote for President. Obama/Biden do not line up with my views, but for the reasons above Romney and Ryan were no better. I voted in every other race, but the spot for President stayed blank. I really wish that the GOP had not tried to pander to the far fringe. I feel that in doing so they brought this defeat to their own door.

  24. Brian,
I also could not vote for either candidate. The Dems are are just wrongheaded and denying economic realities and the Republicans have been absorbed by True Believers who think their God is the only God and only they know the Truth. No other country but extremist Moslem countries that we actually oppose put religion at the top of their national concerns.

We are in tough shape as a country, need to move to the center or we will keep sliding into Third World banana-republic ville IMO.

  25. I have to agree with the several wise folks here who alluded to the fact that the GOP, while deriding the Democrat’s increasing government control were spouting government control with their own issues. If the GOP ever wants to get into power they need to push FREEDOM and LESS control over the populace. Leave abortion, morals, etc. to the States so people who don’t like their States’ policies can move elsewhere. When the Federal government wants to control people’s lives “in the boardroom, the bedroom, in their own homes, etc.” they are going to meet resistance from those groups that are affected and lose those votes. That’s what did Romney and Ryan in.

  26. I was better prepared for post-election riots and violence than I am for the violence that is about to be done to our rights, our culture and our economy.

  27. The fools on the Dark Side have taken their Dear Leader’s advice and exacted their ‘Revenge’ by voting the most anti-American resident of the White House back for another four, or more, years to complete the destruction of our once great nation.

I hope the five good Supreme Court justices can hold out for another four years before some of them will retire. Losing just one of them and letting the Anointed One put in another of his radically liberal judges will bring our Second Admendment closer to doom by changing the balance of power.

Having seen how the Messiah has ruled so far, I simply cannot see him compromising with conservatives to save our country. In fact, he will see his re-election as a mandate to continue, or even accelerate, his radical agenda to transform America into a third world Marxist country.

The number of evil and/or foolish voters in the United States are increasing in number. Older and wiser Americans who can smell out a B.S.er are deceasing due to attrition and younger, more gullible ones coming into voting age are increasing in number. The liberals have done a great job using educators to indocrinate our kids into being zombies for the Democrat Party and the current voting trend proves their extremely successful brainwashing strategy.

Unless there’s a drastic change in the way foolish Americans think (with what litte gray matter they still have), future elections will be even more dire for ‘true’ Americans as they will be increasing outnumbered by their idiotic fellow voters and millions of illegal invaders who should not even be allowed to cast a ballot.

Normally, I would say “God save us all”, but in this case, it seems the Big Dude Up There has forsaken us – at least for now.

Never give up! We are true Americans, and we will fight for what’s right!

  28. Mas, as someone who wrote in Ron Paul, I can tell you that, based on the figures I’ve seen so far, we apparently didn’t pull off a Perot spoiler – by ourselves. However, I’d bet money that Ron Paul supporters who didn’t vote could have provided the margin of victory for Mitt. I’m happy about that.

    Reason?

We dangle it over the GOP’s head in 2016 and force them to nominate someone good.

The fact is, moderates DO. NOT. WIN. McCain was a moderate; he went down in flames. Romney is an outright liberal; look how that worked out. W was percieved as a conservative (wrongly so, but the point still stands), and he won twice. H.W. only won by riding on Reagan’s popularity.

I would be shocked if someone like Jim DeMint or Rand Paul were unable to thoroughly kick the Democrat nominee’s rear end in 2016; sadly, the popular choice at the moment seems to be JEB BUSH. I cannot fathom how anyone could be so stupid as to think that yet *another* left-pretending-to-be-right candidate could possibly do the GOP any good.

  29. Wos, I posted twice here, respectfully disagreeing with the prevailing opinion and with Mas on this issue. Twice my posts have been deleted. I guess there is only room for one opinion. To that I say “OH BUMMER!”.

  30. Randall, that’s bullshit. If your post didn’t appear where you wanted it, you either tied it to the wrong blog post or didn’t send it. If I don’t approve a post, I let the poster — or occasionally, everyone who reads this blog — know that, and know why.
